Staff Spotlight

Name: Curt Pinley
Position: Art instructor / Head Girls and Boys Volleyball Coach
Years at Fremd: 25th year at Fremd??? Close enough
Before Fremd I spent several years traveling between Palatine and Fremd, originally hired at Palatine in 1988.
I spent 2 years teaching in a small farming town, Milford, IL. where I taught art at the High School and Grade School, coaching boys JV basketball .
Milford was just northeast of U of I, where I graduated with an art education degree.
Hobbies:  I enjoy my 1966 lemans convertible, you can find me driving it throughout the summer. I also like deconstructing and reconstructing things around our home. Spending time with my daughter brings me the greatest joy of all.
Tips for Parents:  Children are under a lot of stress at this time of their lives. Understanding them becomes a difficult process when so many things in their lives become a point of concern for them. I feel students are looking for guidance and that is where a parent becomes so important. Not so much for telling them what to do but listening and sharing their stories of struggle with them. I think if your children hear these stories, they can come to their own conclusions and are able to problem solve on their own. Too often we are quick to tell them what to do instead of guiding them to the correct answer.  Learning to problem solve then becomes a life lesson and a very important one.

The Safe Driving Edition

Parking Lot Safety Tips
  • Entering the lot? Observe the No Left Turn sign on Illinois Avenue. When vehicles attempt to turn left into the lot on Illinois, traffic gets backed up into the Quentin Road intersection. The Palatine Police Department is monitoring this traffic sign, and violators will be ticketed.
  • Entering from Quentin Road? Similar to the checkout lines at the grocery store, find the aisle with the shortest lines. This will also allow more people to enter the lot behind you.
  • Dropping off? Pull forward past the front entrance to alleviate congestion in the aisles.
  • Picking up in the front lot? Try locating a parking spot as you wait, and only drive to the front when you receive your student’s “I’m out front” text.
  • Picking up on the street? Please attempt to do so only on the south side of the street (nearest the school) from the Auditorium lot to the bus lane in front. Pickup on the north side of the street is not only dangerous, but it may also earn you a ticket.
  • Walking? Please use designated crosswalks and make sure turning vehicles are stopped before entering the crosswalk.

Highlights and Successes:
  • Congratulations to Girls Golfers Ann Marie O'Sullivan and Annie Gao for qualifying for the Sectional Meet.
  • Congratulations to the following Cross Country runners on earning medals at the West Aurora Stampede:  Nupur Pokharkar, Rebecca Markham, Hannah Ban, and Marisa Ban earned medals in the varsity race
  • Congratulations to Coach Lauren Hall and the Girls Tennis Team on placing 2nd in the MSL Tournament and taking 2nd place overall in the conference!  The following are award winners:  1 singles- Diya Matta - 3rd place;  2 singles- Elsie Ha - 2nd place;   3 singles- Abbie Stelnicki - 2nd place;   1st doubles- Kate Bodensteiner and Julia Smiarowska - 3rd place;   2nd Doubles- Selin Parmaksiz and Kellie Ha- Conference Champions- 1st place;  3rd Doubles- Rachael Carlins and Jane Bodensteiner- 2nd place; and 4th doubles- Emme Puritz and Elizabeth Lubeck- 3rd place.

Staff Spotlight

Name: Lauren O'Donnell
Position: Transition Coordinator/ Work Program Coordinator, Varsity Girls Tennis Coach and Service Over Self Sponsor

Years at Fremd: This is my 7th year at Fremd.

Life Before Fremd: Before teaching at Fremd, I graduated from Miami University of Ohio with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education as an Intervention Specialist. While at Miami of Ohio, I played on the club tennis team, volunteered with Best Buddies and served as the community service officer for my sorority.

Hobbies/Interests: I love to coach tennis and sponsor the Service Over Self club at Fremd! On the weekends, I enjoy going to the dog park with my irish setter, Rawlins, practicing yoga and riding in spin class. My favorite place to travel is Charleston, South Carolina with all of the great beaches, low-country food, shopping and history! I also enjoyed going to Kauai this summer, especially hiking the Na Pali Coast Trail.

Insider Tip for Parents: The transition after high school is an exciting time for adolescents, but it can also be a time during which many students experience difficulties. As a support system for your student it is never too early to start planning for life after high school! Fremd and District 211 offer many great transition-related resources and events; such as the upcoming District 211 College Night, college admission visits through the guidance department, career treks offered throughout the year, The Future Begins Today and Directions Fairs specific for students with special needs, and many more. Careercruising.com and Collegeboard.org are great online resources for students to research possible post-secondary education and career opportunities! For online access to these resources students can ask their counselors.

The RAH Edition

Realtors Against Homelessness

On November 3, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Realtors Against Homelessness (RAH) and the D211 Foundation will be holding their 6th Annual Event at Chandler’s Banquets (401 N. Roselle Rd. in Schaumburg). Tickets for the event are $40 and include hot appetizers, one drink ticket, a silent auction, a live auction, raffles, and a chance to network with others in your community.

What is RAH’s mission? Very simply, they provide financial support and attempt to increase community awareness of the growing number of students facing homelessness in our area. Because we are a relatively affluent school, one may assume that homelessness is not an issue here, but that is just not the case.

RAH and the D211 Foundation are both tremendous supporters of our students. I encourage you to attend the event, sponsor the event, or make a donation to the organization. Please visit www.realtorsagainsthomelessness.com to learn more.

Staff Spotlight

Name:
Ryan Moreau
Position:
Fremd Science Teacher (Biology and Chemistry), Boys Varsity Golf Coach, and Intramurals Sponsor
Years at Fremd:
This is my 7th year at Fremd
Life Before Fremd:
Teaching at Fremd was my first job out of college; before Fremd I was an undergraduate student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  I also student taught at Prospect High School before being hired at Fremd.
Hobbies/Interests:
I love to golf!  It is hard to find time to play during the golf team’s season, but during the summer, I play as often as possible.  I live close to Palatine Hills, so I play there often.  I am always looking for good deals elsewhere too so I can play at as many new courses as I can.  Also, I love to cook – my wife is a great cook but doesn’t enjoy it as much as I do, so I am the chef at home.   As much as we love dates out to a restaurant, we have just as much or more fun making things ourselves from start to finish.
Insider Tip for Parents:
If you are a parent of a student who may forget to turn assignments in from time to time, and that class uses schoology for class materials and homework submission, you can check whether or not your son/daughter submitted their work by going to schoology, clicking on the assignment, and then clicking the submissions tab – you will either see the time-stamped submitted document, or you will see nothing, which means that assignment was not turned in.
If you are a parent of a struggling student, encourage that student to contact the teacher to arrange for help.  Have them email the teacher and copy you on the email so you are in the loop too.  The teacher will respond with some advice, or to set up a meeting time, or to coordinate a trip to the tutoring center when a teacher that teaches that subject will be present.
Make sure your son/daughter has some screen-free time at home.  They look at and use their phone and iPad enough at school.  Once their homework is done, it’s time to wind down with some other form of R&R.  Do a puzzle, play a game, go for a family walk…that kind of time is HUGE for helping him/her succeed in school and life.
