Comprehensive School Climate Survey
On Friday, February 20, you should be receiving an email from District 211. While we are required to gather information from students, parents and staff about our instructional programs and school climate, this is the first year we are using this particular survey. District 211 administration (including the principals) reviewed several options, and we feel that this survey will provide us with the most useful information to gauge the effectiveness of our instructional programs and our constituents’ satisfaction with the quality of educational experiences our students receive.

We really value your input. Please take 10-15 minutes to take this survey. Thanks!

And a Valentine's Day Tribute to My Wife
On an average week, I attend school events (meetings, sports, activities) on at least three nights, but often four. There has even been occasion where there was something going on every night. Needless to say, this is a lot of time away from my family. Last night, after returning from my third consecutive night of events without seeing my kids before bedtime, my wife, Christy, said, "Thank you for all that you do to support our family." Knowing the toll that taking care of our three rapscallions can take on a person, I am grateful that she understands the time demands of my position. I couldn't do the job that I love without her positive attitude and support. And the heart-shaped pancakes that my little guys and I will make for her this weekend are only a small token of my appreciation for her.

Name:  Tom Cole

Position:  Guidance Department Chair

Years at Fremd:  This is year #15.

Life Before Fremd:   I went to Loyola University of Chicago on the 8-year plan.  Got my undergrad degree in English, worked in the residence halls, became a residence hall director at Campion Hall, an all-male dormitory on Sheridan Road on the Lake Shore Campus.   While in Loyola’s employ, I completed my Master’s degree.  Loyola was a great place to live and work.  I learned to love the city. From there I worked at St. Viator High School (of which I am an alum) for 20 years, first as an English Teacher, then a program chair, and for my 13 years there,  as a counselor.  I married the lovely Mollie Mills in 1986.  I got to know Fremd and 211 when Julie Lockett Labrasca Schmidt, then psychologist at Hoffman Estates, helped us at Viator to train peer mediators in the mid-‘90’s.  Through her I connected with the Chicago and Suburban Peer Mediation training program initiated out of D211,  and met other great Fremd folks, like Kim Filian, Gina Baddick, Suzanne Adamski and Tony Tosh.  I consider myself lucky to have landed here in 2000 and to be enjoying this great 2nd Act in my professional life.
Hobbies/Interests:   I love movies old and new.  “It’s a Wonderful Life” is one favorite (My son’s name is George Bailey Cole) . . .  “The Big Lebowski” is another.   “Casablanca” is a perfectly crafted gem of film entertainment.   Recent recommendations:  “Boyhood”, “The Drop”, and “About Time”.   I love to ride my bicycle.  I have more than a passing interest in craft-brewed beer.
Insider Tip for Parents:   I should have a really good one, right?   I have been on an academic schedule for my whole life, and I have taken many courses.  I have found parenting to be a lifelong independent study course for which I have not been provided the grading rubric.

Continuing the 5 Questions
What will be your “fingerprints” on this building after you leave? (Creating sustainable change)

It’s strange to think that I am pondering about my legacy only midway through my first year, but I understand the importance of this question. The very idea illustrates what I see as my vision, my passions, and what I stand for as an educator. Two main things come to mind:

High school is such an influential time on young people. Growing up is challenging enough, so I want high school to be a positive vehicle for the development of our young people. There is no better way to accomplish this goal than to connect them to the school through:
  • Academic experiences that are rewarding, challenging and relevant
  • Involvement in activities and sports
  • Finding friends and acquaintances with common interests
  • Providing an environment where students are treated respectfully by other students, as well as the adults in the building
  • Opportunities to discover and build their self-identity
When all of these aspects are present, we usually find that students:
  • Are invested in their education and future
  • Are committed to their extra-curricular activities
  • demonstrate more school spirit and pride in their classmates’ achievements
  • Are generally happier.
By the time I leave Fremd High School, it would be great if people could say, “I’m proud of the way we do things around here.”

The second part of what I want to leave behind is a culture where staff feel supported to pursue their professional interests and growth. Don’t get me wrong--Fremd has benefitted from strong administrative support AND outstanding teachers long before I got here, so it wouldn’t be something “new” that I would add. But I definitely take pride in providing opportunities for staff to improve through professional development, conferences and presentations, classroom observations, and supervision meetings. I’d like to think that when I leave Fremd High School, the organization continues to strive to be on the cutting edge of educational trends, theories and best practices. We have a very dedicated and talented staff, and it is my hope that my leadership perpetuates this upward trend.

Name: Jeff Williams

Position: School Psychologist, Varsity Football, Boys Track and Field
Years at Fremd: 3

Life Before Fremd: School, school, and more school. I spent time at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and National-Louis University.

Hobbies/Interests: Spending time with family and friends, coaching, and helping community members achieve health and wellness at Palatine’s newest CrossFit gym, CrossFit Pally (on Colfax next to the Post Office, and opening this weekend).

Insider Tip for Parents: We are often tempted to provide advice when really what the situation calls for is honest and open listening. Some of my most productive conversations that created change for students is when I dropped my opinions and preconceived notions and just kept both ears open.
